Verizon iPhone 5 Ships Unlocked, Works on AT&T Network

Can’t decide whether to pick up an iPhone 5 for ATT or Verizon? Considering jumping ship from one carrier to the other? Worried about your ability to jump carriers if you find your experience with one just doesn’t go that well wherever you happen to live?
If these are the kinds of questions you’re asking yourself in advance of your big iPhone 5 purchase (or upgrade), it might be worth your while to prioritize Verizon’s iPhone 5 above ATT’s — if those are the two big carriers you’re mentally fighting over, that is.
Why’s that? We’re not Verizon investors. Rather, the reason’s purely technological. According to multiple sources — including a spokeswoman from Verizon itself — the company has apparently decided to ship all of its iPhone 5 smartphones unlocked.
Which is to say, you could theoretically use a Verizon iPhone 5 on either Verizon or ATT’s network, provided you perform a bit of a crazy process involving cutting down a standard ATT SIM card jamming it into your iPhone 5 — as illustrated by Jeff Benjamin over at iDownloadBlog.
Of course, you could also pick up a Nano SIM card from ATT and avoid the manual bit of hacking.
According to Benjamin, he was able to use his slimmed-down ATT SIM card to connect up to ATT’s HSPA+ “4G” network without error — and he’s on a Verizon-contracted iPhone 5.
“That’s great news for travelers, and a big win for customers,” Benjamin writes. “Let’s just hope things stay this way.”
In the interests of fairness, however, it’s not as if Verizon’s iPhone is technologically superior to ATT’s in all instances.
Verizon’s iPhone does best ATTs by allowing users to roam internationally on 4G LTE speeds. ATT’s will default back to a 3G connection should you take your phone outside of the US, Canada, or Mexico, as a result of Verizon’s iPhone 5 supporting a total of five LTE bands to ATT’s two.
However, ATT iPhone 5 owners will enjoy 4G LTE speeds in Canada when the Verizon-based iPhone 5s will not — again, a result of the supported LTE bands across the two devices.
Additionally, Verizon’s iPhone 5 still doesn’t allow users to access voice and data services simultaneously, an annoyance fact given the number of other Verizon-supported smartphones that can simultaneously access its CDMA network for voice calls and its LTE network for data. While the same issue affects ATT’s iPhone 5 as well, its device can actually tap into the carrier’s HSPA+ network (slower than it’s full-fledged LTE network) for simultaneous voice and data.
In other words, there are important but subtle distinctions between the iPhone 5s offered by both Verizon and ATT. Depending on how you plan to use your device, it’s worth researching which version of the phone best fits your life — even if you can freely switch between the two big networks using Verizon’s iPhone 5.
