Twitter’s iOS Upgrades Are Awkward, Helpful [REVIEW]

When you load up Twitter’s iPad update for the first time, chances are you’re going to think there’s something wrong.

The iPhone 5 is set to hit store shelves on Sept. 21. A few lucky reviewers, however, have already gotten the chance to spend a few days with the device and craft their reviews of the latest-generation of the iconic smartphone.
So what are they saying?
Overall, reviewers are pretty impressed with the update. The phone’s hardware has earned accolades from every reviewer across the board — they love both how the new phone feels and looks.
Reviewers also laud the iPhone’s new 4-inch screen, although not all are in love with how some current apps — not yet having been adjusted for its new size — look on the latest device’s screen.

The same can be said for Apple’s new Lighting connector, which is able to transfer data faster than Apple’s previous connector. But the headache of not being able to use some accessories – and lack of support for iPod out, a specification used in many cars – was a problem for many.

AT&T’s FaceTime Blocking Leads to FCC Complaint

Three interest groups announced their intent to file a complaint with the FCC against AT&T, after the carrier said it would block Apple’s FaceTime from its cellular data service unless customers signed up for a particular plan.

Free Press, Public Knowledge, and the New America Foundation’s Open Technology notified (PDF) AT&T Tuesday of their intent to file a complaint with the FCC about “AT&T Inc.’s decision to block certain users from accessing the FaceTime application over AT&T’s mobile networks,” which the groups allege is a violation of Net Neutrality laws.

FCC rules require notification of intent 10 days prior to the actual filing of a complaint.
“AT&T’s decision to block FaceTime unless a customer pays for voice and text minutes she doesn’t need is a clear violation of the FCC’s Open Internet rules,” Free Press Policy Director Matt Wood said in a statement.

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.

If that fails:

Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.

Unable to send or receive email in Apple iphone

Setting up

Before you can use your email account on iPad - you need to add your account to Mail.

1. Tap Mail
2. Select your account type. Tap Other if your account is not listed.
3. Enter your account information and tap Save. Mail configures most email accounts automatically. Otherwise, you will be prompted for any additional settings.
4. Once your account information is saved - you can start sending and receiving email.

You can configure additional accounts by tapping Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account
If you experience any difficulty in sending and receiving email - continue to the next step in the assistant.

Check connection

Check your connection by using Safari to open a web page. If you are connecting with Wi-Fi, note that many public Wi-Fi networks require users to sign in to use the service.
To turn off Wi-Fi, tap Settings > Wi-Fi.
If you are still unable to connect to the internet, this troubleshooting assistant can help.

Resolve multiple device lock-out

Using two or more devices to access the same email account sometimes creates a lock-out issue that is easily solved.
Some steps you can take to prevent this from occurring are not leaving your computer's mail application open, and increasing the interval to fetch mail on your computer and iPad. To change this setting on iPad go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data.

Check SMTP settings

1. Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Under Accounts, tap the account from which you're trying to send mail. You may need to tap your account more than once.
2. Under Outgoing Mail Server, tap SMTP.
3. If you don't see Outgoing Mail Server, you may need to tap your account once more first.
4. Tap the SMTP server for your email account and verify the settings are correct.
5. If you have multiple email accounts on iPad, try using an SMTP server from another account. Tap the SMTP account and Select On on the On/Off slider.

Set up account directly on iPad

Mail settings may vary between computers and mobile devices. If you've synced your email account using iTunes, setting it up directly on your iPad will help ensure you have the correct settings in place.
Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and then tap your email provider.
If you already have an account on your iPad, tap Add Account, then tap your email provider.
When you enter your email address, iPad will look up your service provider's settings for you. If iPad can't find your service provider's settings, this articlecan help you obtain the necessary account settings from your provider.

Restart iPad

To restart iPad, first turn iPad off by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until a red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider and iPad will turn off after a few moments.
Next, turn iPad on by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

Leaking light in Apple’s iPhone 5

Another apparent defect affecting the white iPhone 5 is a small light leak from the LED backlight shining through a small crack in the edge where the front panel fits into the aluminum casing. 

BGR confirmed the issue with one of its own iPhone 5s, though it reported that the flaw is only visible “under low-light or completely dark situations.” The issue doesn’t appear to interfere with the operation of an affected device, though Apple will reportedly replace any device showing this problem.

Puny aluminum in Apple’s iPhone 5

iFixit told us that the new anodized aluminum casing of the iPhone 5 is fairly resistant to scratching, but it did note that the chamfered edge around the screen can wear away, revealing the shiny bare aluminum underneath. AllThingsD reported that there have been widespread 

claims of scratches, nicks, and other blemishes in the anodized surface of users’ iPhones, sometimes even right out of the box. AllThingsD did note that aluminum is not as scratch-resistant as the stainless steel used in the iPhone 4 and 4S.

The Maps App Is A Mess in Apple iPhone 5

When you launch Passbook for the first time, it will more than likely be empty. There will be a link that takes you to the App Store to help you find apps with Passbook integration.

Adding a Pass is easy. When you open the Pass, no matter what the source is, you're able to preview it. There's a front and back, both of which contain information about the Pass. If you're satisfied with the information on the Pass, tap on Add.

You'll see a fancy animation and the Pass will vanish from your screen. You can open the Passbook app and view any Passes you have added. Switching between them is as simple as tapping, or swiping to the respective Pass. Depending on how the merchant uses Passbook, you may not even have to go into Passbook to have your Pass scanned.

• On the back of some Passes you'll notice there are options. Some Passes will ask for permission to monitor your location, others will ask for permission to use background data for automatic updates. Leaving the option for a Pass to appear in a lock screen will allow Passes triggered by your location or at a specific time to show up without you doing anything.

Passes you allow to update automatically will alert you to any important changes. For example, a boarding pass for a flight where your gate has changed will update in the background and push the new information to your lock screen, alerting you of the change.

Once you're done with a card, you can view the back side of it and tap on the Trash Can button.

Passbook is the one feature added to iOS 6 whose success completely relies on developers and merchants implementing it.

iPhone 5 Problems: iOS 6 Apple Maps App Feels Like the Movie Inception

If by now you're not familiar with the Tumblr blog "The Amazing iOS 6 Maps," you're missing out on the online conversation surrounding Apple's newly released operating system iOS 6. To make a long story short, Apple broke up with Google over Android. As a result, the Cupertino company decided to substitute Google Maps, one of iPhone's favorite applications, with its own version. And Apple fans are not impressed. 

A tsunami of bad social media ensued Apple's otherwise brilliant release of iPhone 5. Users haven't been shy about showing their dissatisfaction through multiple social media channels. To be clear, they're not unhappy with the phone, but with its integrated maps application. Basically, Apple maps lacks businesses locations, navigating instructions, and other data and features that have made Google Maps the leader in its field. Like PolicyMic tech expert 

Belinda Moreira said, "why try to reinvent the wheel?"  
The glitch originated the previously referenced Tumblr blog, as well as numerous online memes mocking Apple maps' inaccurate directions as well as pixelated images. One of the first Apple maps' screenshots that circulated on the internet shows a highway the way it would look right after a severe earthquake. This prompted trollish comparisons with the movie Inception, by Dark Knight Rises director Christopher Nolan.

So far, iPhone users are coping with the Google Maps loss by downloading their beloved app as a "web app" right from their browser Safari and into their new and swanky iPhone 5s. But it's not the same. Meanwhile, Google has suggested it would launch Google Maps as a native application. But probably, for die-hard iPhone and Google Maps fans, this solution won't work either. Apple's iPhone 4S Battery Troubles Now Joined By New Problems

Apple says it's still investigating battery drain issues with the iPhone 4S after some users complained that the iOS 5.0.1 update didn't solve their problems. But now Apple is facing new gripes that the iOS 5.0.1 update is causing more problems with the iPhone 4S including; microphone failures, Wi-Fi signal loss, and cellular network reception issues, according to reports.

"The recent iOS software update addressed many of the battery issues that some customers experienced on their iOS 5 devices," Apple said in a statement to All Things Digital. "We continue to investigate a few remaining issues."

Apple released iOS 5.0.1 on Thursday, claiming that it would fix iPhone 4S battery drain. The update also added multitouch gestures for the original iPad and fixed a few other issues. While some iPhone users said the update solved their battery problems, others said the battery suckage was just as bad, or worse, than before.

Some users may never be happy with iPhone 4S battery life, because as I've explained before, smartphone batteries are fundamentally sub-par. But Apple is at least confirming that it hasn't completely solved the problem.

Meanwhile, some users are complaining of new problems with iOS 5.0.1. According to GigaOM, some users have experienced microphone failures, Wi-Fi signal loss and cellular network reception issues. A report from The Startup Foundry says the update is forgetting to list contact names when the user receives a text message or phone call. (A partial fix for the latter issue is available on The Startup Foundry's Website.) Apple didn't specify whether these new bugs are part of the "few remaining issues" that the company is investigating now.

On the bright side, whenever Apple does release a new patch, it'll be easy to get thanks to over the air updates.

iPhone 5 Teardown: It’s Easier to Repair Than iPhone 4S

After their prompt EarPods teardown, the iFixit team wasted no time in disassembling the iPhone 5, which is hitting the US retail stores today, Sept. 21.
In its assessment of the devices it tears down, iFixit focuses on repairability, and this is where the iPhone 5 scores well: 7 out of 10 (10 being the easiest to repair), which is one point better than the iPhone 4S’ score.
The glass and the display come off the device quite easily, and so does the battery, which is good news.
Unfortunately, the front glass, digitizer and http://www.techbuddiesonline.com/Pages/Apple_iPad_support.aspxLCD are all one component, which increases repair cost. Also, Apple still uses non-standard Pentalobe screws on the iPhone 5, and a lot of smaller components are soldered to a single ribbon cable.
Luckily, those downsides don’t spoil the overall score for the iPhone 5 — since a shattered screen is a very common cause for repair, the fact that it comes off the device first is very positive.

FOX Affiliate Reports iPhone 5 Has Laser Keyboard, Holographic Images

The FOX affiliate in New York City aired a segment from New York City’s flagship Apple store Monday evening where they spoke with Apple fanatics waiting on line for the iPhone 5. It seemed like a normal package until the end.
Then, things got a little weird.
The reporter lists some of the coolest new features of the iPhone 5, including holographic photos and a laser keyboard. Unfortunately for them (and us), those features aren’t actually available on the iPhone 5. It appears that the footage used in the package is from a year-old concept video by Aatma Studio, which you can watch below.
